When COVID happened, we were limited to the things we could do and places we could go to, and one of those places we could go to was the grocery store. All these years of strategic grocery shopping finally came in handy. I am sharing my favorite grocery store locations in New York City, tips you can use regardless of where you live, and items I always keep in my house.

Tips for Grocery Shopping

Eat before you go

This may sound silly, but so is buying items that is NOT on your list just because you got a craving is not a good look and an expensive move.

MAKE A LIST

You need to be strategic about your grocery list and have a plan. I make my list the day before I go grocery shopping to take inventory of what I need, what is low, and what am I making for dinner for the next week or two. Doing this will eliminate extra trips.

save money using COUPONS

Cutting coupons can seem like a daunting task, but the savings is what makes it all worth it; if you want to learn more about how to coupon please check out my previous post.

REVIEW SALES CIRCULAR

Most circular are now available on the store’s website or via their app, which makes it easy to look at in a glance.

Buy in Bulk if an items on sale

I am NOT telling you to hoard, but if you see an item you use FREQUENTLY, I recommend stocking up for the month. Buying certain items in bulk, such as meat and seafood, is almost always a cheaper per unit price. I am able to store these items for a longer period of time in my freezer using the FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer. This vacuum sealer system is proven to keep food fresh up to 5X longer versus using your traditional freezer bags.

Frequency and timing of my shopping trips

  • Go grocery shopping every two weeks.

  • Avoid going on or near the 1st and 15th to miss the crowds.

  • Weekdays are great except for Mondays. On Mondays, people love to get their lives together to start the week out.

  • If the weather is rainy or ugly outside, generally, there will be fewer people trekking out to the grocery store.
