[SPONSORED] Body by Brooklyn Experience

This is a sponsored post for Body by Brooklyn, but the opinions expressed in this post are based on my personal views.

I Had my first massage since the start of the pandemic at Body by Brooklyn which is the largest Black-owned, women-minority-owned European day spa in the great state of New York.  The best part of the experience was after my much-needed massage I was able to lounge and not immediately rush back to the bustling city after a soothing self-care activity.

Self-care.

A word we hear often and typically for some it is more of a reactive measure than a proactive measure.   You know what I mean.  You are hanging by a thread, you are burnt out from work, or everything that could go wrong goes wrong.  At this point, you are sending an email to your team to notify them of your PTO scheduled for NEXT week, researching spas, looking up flights, or googling “Quick weekend getaways from [insert your city]”

We have all been here.

The pandemic taught me to check in with myself more often to determine what my body needs mentally and physically.  Being proactive in your self-care can be as simple as having one or two fewer social engagements on your calendar for the week or taking that Uber versus being herded onto the subway like cattle.  Self-care is ultimately taking time for yourself to recharge, and I am a believer you cannot pour into others if you are not properly taking care of yourself.

Let's chat about Body by Brooklyn, and why you need to book an appointment ASAP for your REGULAR self-care!

TREATMENTS

Body by Brooklyn is a 10,000 square foot day spa owned by Terrance Spriggs and Tukkie Armenio and this oasis of serenity is located in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn.  Both owners have an extensive history of working in the massage therapy industry and have set out to create an environment that is welcoming to everyone.

Body by Brooklyn offers a number of treatments such as facials, massages, and body treatments.  The facials include microdermabrasion, deep pore cleaning, plus more and they even have some services geared towards the gentlemen to help with razor bumps and ingrown hairs.  I know your mind is already traveling to the perfect gift for that special guy in your life, and they do offer gift certificates.  In addition to facials, they also offer massages that include hot stones, Swedish, and bamboo fusion, to name a few.  If you are a first-timer in the massage world they highly recommend the Swedish massage as it allows you to communicate to the massage therapist your desired level of pressure.  Body by Brooklyn specializes in a CBD Swedish massage which is created with chronic pain in mind and to alleviate stress as well.  The body treatments that BBB offers include mud or exfoliating wraps and even body waxing.

During my time at BBB, I treated myself to the aromatherapy massage for 60 minutes which can go by rather fast when you are experiencing pure bliss, and I recommend opting for 90 minutes.  Upon walking into the dimly lit room I was met with the melodic voice of SZA playing low in the background and the scents of lavender and roses.   I was introduced to the talented lead therapist Shamica and she inquired if there were any areas to focus on and I shared I had a great deal of tension in my lower back.  During my time at Body by Brooklyn Shamica shared with me why she commonly advocates for people of color to reward themselves with massages or body treatments more than just a once-a-year occurrence.

During my research, I learned

“The US Bureau of Labor Statistics provides some information about the state of massage therapy in the country indicating that 83.6% of the profession are women and over 70% white.”

“The racial/ethnic makeup of a profession is important because when there is a diverse workforce there can be improvements in patient satisfaction and access to care for those from minority populations.”

Having adequate representation in the massage therapy industry matters when it is heavily dominated white industry, and studies have shown a consumer is more likely to purchase a product or service when they see themselves represented in the field or ads.

AMENITIES

Two of the unique amenities of Body by Brooklyn are the Wet and Dry Lounge which is available with most of your treatments of at least 60 minutes and can be used before or after.  The Wet Lounge offers a Russian sauna, Swedish sauna, arctic cold plunge pool, and cooling shower.  In order to utilize this amenity, you will need a bathing suit.  The Dry Lounge offers a full-service bar to have the perfect cocktail or mocktail to unwind or food from the local restaurant BBB has partnered with that currently offers Thai food.

After my aromatherapy massage, I headed to the dry lounge to relax in my reserved seating and ordered a glass of champagne. One of the many things I enjoy about BBB is having the option to relax after massage or treatment versus your typical experience you are then rushed out the door to make room for the next client.  Overall I enjoyed my experience at Body by Brooklyn and planning to make this a quarterly occurrence at a minimum.
