Happy Hour In Harlem
Harlem indeed holds a special place in my heart. There is nothing else like it in New York City or even in Manhattan. As soon as you step off the subway the air smells different, the people move differently, and there is a real sense of community that you feel. As many of you know, I have been a Harlemite for a couple of years, and I am the biggest believer in supporting MY HOOD. With that said I felt led to share with you some of my favorite Happy Hour spots uptown.
Yatenga - This French Bistro and Bar has been open for almost seven years and knows the winning combination for a successful, happy hour. And that is giving people exactly what they want from a happy hour, and that is plenty of options. Yatenga's happy hour is EVERYDAY from 4pm - 8pm and includes $3 Draft Beers, $3 shots, $4 House Wines, $5 Frozen Margaritas, and $6 Well Drinks.
Cantina - They have dubbed themselves as Harlem's Favorite Taqueria and Bar, and they pack out their bar almost every Happy Hour. Their first location is on 7th avenue, and with much success, they opened a second establishment on Malcolm X Blvd. Not only do they have a kick-ass happy hour but a great Taco Tuesday special for only $3, and THERE IS NO LIMIT! Felt like some Master P sound bite needed to follow that sentence. Their vast selection of taco choices ranges from Mango Jerk Chicken, Spanish Chorizo, Mexican Pulled Pork, and others. Their happy hour is from 3 pm - 7 pm, and this is one of those places you NEED to arrive early. Their Malcolm X location has a more massive bar, and therefore you have a better chance of nabbing a seat.
The Honeywell - This bar has successfully disrupted the bar scene in Hamilton Heights (which I still call Harlem) by providing us with a 70's retro speakeasy kind of vibe. This is the sister bar to Harlem Public and At The Wallace, and each bar has a different type of ambiance. At The Honeywell, they create a memorable experience for the patron by the way the cocktail is crafted right before your eyes. Their happy hour is every day from 5 pm - 8 pm and includes $9 cocktails drinks, $5 house wine, and bar food specials as well.
Oso - You had me at happy hour twice a day or what some bars call reverse happy hour. Did you know the owner is the Alex Trebek's son? Apparently while bartending in undergrad is how Matthew Trebek caught the hospitality bug and decided to open up his open restaurant in Harlem with a Mexican street food concept. Their tequila flights or $8 happy margaritas are sure to win you over.
